Horizontally Backwards is the product of a journey hitchhiking across the USA, documenting places in-between, and the stories of people I encountered on the way - a minimalist road movie with a personal narrative. As I travelled across the bleak landscapes of Middle America I become a vessel for others voices, personal stories, everyday frustrations, and conflicting identities. The landscapes that I wait in, as I pass through, become the backdrop to these stories, embodying the history from which those stories came.
I wait by the side of the road, at gas stations, parking lots and lay-bys, by oil fields, forests and oceans. A passing car stops, I get in and we start to talk, we share stories with each other about our lives, hopes, dreams, frustrations. I create a memento of our encounter, a place with a new memory, a place that could be anywhere, between somewhere and somewhere else -somewhere on the way.
