Jennifer Brookes: Let me begin by saying my half of the video this week was inspired by my good friend Jenisa. In our class we’ve been discussing chance, and allowing the possibility of chance operations in your artwork. Watercolor paints bring about randomness regardless of how planned and developed your idea is. You might even say that painting with watercolors requires sacrificing complete control over the piece to allow chance to orchestrate its own final product. I think that’s why I like the medium so much, it’s out of my control. My friend Camarin helped me shoot most of these (1,300!) pictures while I applied the paint. Thanks, Camarin.
Eric Peterson: This past week, I headed down to Austin, Texas with Houses for SXSW, one of the largest music festivals in the US. The whole thing was completely overwhelming. There was nowhere in downtown Austin you could be without hearing music blaring from one side of the street or the other. Houses played three shows that went over very well, but more than anything, it was great to be able to see so many performances. I can’t remember the last time I’ve had the time to see a show where I wasn’t either on the bill or supporting friends who were on the bill. Seeing all of the performers and new music gave me a lot of inspiration, and this week’s piece is part of that puzzle.
