This video is about false memory and forgetting.
The Jealous Memory is about forgetting and notions of false memory or fantasy memory. Memory is an unreliable and contested site in contemporary society and we are no longer able to trust it as accurate or reliable. Governments, media and corporations all influence what and how we store and retrieve in terms of memories or recollections of shared events. How then can we construct notions of the past when we cannot trust our own memories? This work seeks to explore false memory syndrome and the missing limb syndrome, whereby amputated limbs are often perceived to still exist by tricks of the mind. This is related back to Proust and his notions of memory. Can we be jealous of our own past? Can missing be replaced? Can we trust what we even think or see?
