OPUS/YOU AGAIN collaborative work with Árstíðir
MAKING OF video viewable here: vimeo.com/104391177
Opus is an expression of my inside. Everything you see is part of me.
After discussing what I wanted to achieve visually, Árstíðir brought the song to me in its earliest delicate
form. From there Gunnar met me and dug into my emotions, questioned me until tears escaped, he left
and sent me lyrics to exchange and suggest and then he worked the final poetry. Following the filming, Karl took the edit and set the strings to the visuals and the collaboration is set.
Within the concept exists the cast of the landscape, the bear, the costume.
The glacier, Langjökull, is melting and dangerous. Every move is unsure, each step has to be felt to see
there is solid ground. There are moulins all around to swallow you hundreds of meters into the earth. The
ice is disappearing, with only a century or two left yet it is immense and breathtaking with the most
beautiful parts being the most dangerous.
The bear, stunning in its ice form, encompasses the worst and best of my nature. Anger, possessiveness,
arousal, strength, independence, power, confidence, survival – the beast and my heart, cold and dead
The choker was made by Benas Staskauskas. I asked him to produce a choker of hands, fitted to actually
stifle me in the way certain life choices have. It was sculpted tightly to my throat and it was almost impossible to maintain wearing it. The weight and hold ensured real pain was present.
The costume was created by Fiona Cribben. Close to my heart and part of my family, she knew all of what I was expressing within this piece. She took the beauty and size I originally desired and pushed beyond it
with love and care bringing the costume into a more personal reflection of me than expected. Taking only
reused materials and utilising krona coins to show financial struggle brought the concept even closer to
Iceland. The weight of the coins physically reminding me of the pressure of circumstance.
My heart reborn, released from the ice was hand crafted by Karolina Daria Flora, she meticulously poured
beauty into it, so that its hope and presence is art in itself.
I took months of loss to the top of an ice cap and in the silence of the crew let the pain overtake me. We
filmed until I physically couldn't function from cold, from pain, from nausea and at the end hope was
glowing in me.
I thank everyone who helped to make this what it is.
This is Opus. This is You Again.
