Two movements from 'Don't Blink', a commission funded by Chamber Music America: New Jazz Works and the generosity of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Mvt.II, "Glacier", was the catalyst for the work and was inspired by a photograph I took on a family trip to Glacier National Park in the 1970s. The changes from then to now are dramatic as global warming has melted much of the ice away. I wanted to capture both the grandeur of the glacier and the violence of it's demise, so naturally it features a drum solo by Satoshi Takeishi! Segue into Mvt.III, "Smoky Madtom Hoedown", a tribute to the Appalachian trail and a species of native fish that were accidental rendered extinct by the National Parks Service. Featuring english horn as a surrogate bluegrass fiddler. Thanks to the marvelous contributions from Pete McCann (guitar), Mike Holober (piano), Kermit Driscoll (bass), and Satoshi Takeishi (drums and percussion). Premiered at Shapeshifter Lab, Brooklyn, June 24, 2014.
