Participating in a worship service, whether every week or every week that we are available, cannot fulfill the expectation that we should become more and more like Jesus. A worship service is an outcome, a result, a response. We offer our worship, adoration, and praise for the grace, mercy, love, and justice of God. It does not, however, provide the opportunity for engaging Scripture deeply, for developing a pattern of prayer that is meaningful for us individually; it won't provide the development of relationships that keep us within arms' length of other members of the Jesus family who can counsel with us, coach us, encourage us, and correct us. And it won't allow for the individualized discernment of the gifts, abilities, passions, and calling that helps each of us individually find our place as God's a partner, under the influence of the Holy Spirit, for the healing of the world in Jesus' name.
