Advocating for Jermaine Ferguson, Brandy Earthman said that Ferguson was innocent and set up to take a murder charge by an incarcerated person who was threatened and coerced by Minneapolis Police. Earthman spoke to a crowd in the Hennepin County Government Center on November 18, 2024.
Jermaine Ferguson was convicted of first-degree murder for a December 2004 shooting in Minneapolis based on uncorroborated accomplice testimony and multiple jailhouse testimonies, which led to plea deals. One of those involved in the killing, Kentrell Green, admitted later that he lied about Ferguson’s involvement because the Minneapolis Police were threatening to take his son away from their mother and threatened to send her to prison if he, as well as she, didn’t testify against Ferguson.
“I was told I would lose my son and do life in prison if I didn’t give the police Jermaine Ferguson.” Kentrell Green, court transcript
“I am Brandy Earthman, I am Jermaine's best friend for over 20 years. I'm going to read something that he wanted us to share before we begin speaking. I'm speaking on behalf of the wrongful conviction of Jermaine Ferguson to make sure his voice is heard. We're asking that the state take a real good look at his case. Jermaine has been sitting in prison with 129 year sentence, while the man who has admitted to the crime has been released. His codefendant testified at trial, where Jermaine's lawyer at the time wasn't allowed to let the jury know, that [Kentrell] Green took a deal in exchange for his testimony. Not only that, but Green has since then recanted. At trial, two victims stated that they did not know Jermaine Ferguson and they'd never seen him. How can appellant judge make a statement on record saying that Green was coerced by the Minneapolis Police Department and nothing was done about it? We've been screaming it out loud. No fingerprints, no DNA, no weapons, no eyewitnesses. And your key witness has admitted to giving a false testimony. But Jermaine is still in prison. He was over-sentenced and wrongfully convicted and we demand his release immediately. Jermaine has been wrongfully incarcerated for 19 years. He was also indicted under a federal statute involving kidnapping, murder across state lines. However, the crime he was on trial for was First-Degree Premeditated Murder, that was an illegal indictment due to no kidnapping nor victim taken across state lines. That is a misuse of power through part, through lack of integrity in the judicial process from the judge, not following the code of jud. conduct 2.11A. The State of Minnesota targeted Jermaine because of his last name and forced charges on him. Is this justice or just us? Thank you.”
