Dance for Confined Space is a site specific work choreographed and performed by Paola Napolitano, and filmed and edited by Gregory White. Thematically, the work is concerned with enclosure and suppression in both the physical and psychological realms. The audience (and also, it is suggested, the performer) are unaware of how she has arrived in this space; it could have been at the hands of other people, or herself - perhaps in an altered state. The oppressive nature of this particular space is reflected in Napolitano’s movement, restricted and forced to perform in a particular way. The held poses and expressions serve to reinforce this sense of enclosure, simultaneously providing a window into the emotional and psychological undertones of the piece. Napolitano’s shadows and reflections, accentuated by filming the work in black and white, further suggest a fractured psychological landscape.
The work is set to Texture for Violincello and Pianoforte No. 2 by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons, in which the cello provides a wavering and raw repeated melody, contrasted with the precise, delicately-played piano. The fragility of the cello and its audible struggle complements the visual struggle we observe as Napolitano attempts to break free from her confinements.
