THE SLOPE OF WILD STRAWBERRIES. PANERIAI MEMORIAL
Lina Albrikiene’s most recent video installation ‘The Slope of Wild Sreawberries. Paneriai Memorial’ and ‘Zuikiu Bus Stop. Paneriai’ are marked by the recurring theme of loss and issues related to memory. Initially interested in the questions of personal dimension the artist expands the scope of her work through the discoveries that she made during the research process. The investigations of her childhood sites (Paneriai Forest ) lead her to the exploration of personal and historical contexts that intertwine and redefine each other in her artwork. The objects in relation acquire new meanings that stimulate the exploration of the connections between individual and collective memory. The artist is drawing a parallel between her personal experience that relates to her childhood and the father’s figure and the emotional perception scheme of atrocity. The theme of the Holocaust and the theme of The Second World War becomes the central as the objects of collective memory and emerges through associative signifiers in the silent imagery that deals with the painful past: the wild strawberries in the scene at the manmade Holocaust memorial, the landscapes marked by the horrifying destruction and in the WWII bombed by Germans train tunnel which was the main line to the West World.
1 Zuikis (eng. hare).
2 Paneriai Forest is the historical site where the Ponar Massacre took place taking lives of more than 100 000 people.
