CHRIST Evangelical Lutheran Church - West Salem, Wisconsin
Today's service is as follows:
M: In the name of the Father
C: Who created us and gives us everything we need for body and life;
M: In the name of the Son
C: Who redeemed us and won for us eternal life;
M: In the name of the Holy Spirit
C: Who creates and strengthens our faith in this life as we anticipate eternal life.
HYMN Oh, for a Thousand Tongues to Sing | 340 (vs 1 - 2)
M: We stand before God. We know that we can’t enter his presence on our own. We know we don’t sing perfectly. Rather, we’ve grumbled. We know we don’t
proclaim perfectly. Rather, we’ve hidden our faith and dishonored his name. The sins we’ve committed in thought, word and deed simply prove what we are: sinful and worthy of God’s eternal anger.
HYMN Oh, for a Thousand Tongues to Sing | 340 (vs 3-4)
C: Forgive my sins, O Lord – forgive me the sins of my present and the sins of my past, the sins of my soul and the sins of my body; the sins which I have done to please myself, and the sins which I have done to please others. Forgive me my lazy and idle sins, forgive my serious and deliberate sins, forgive me those sins which I know, and those sins which I don’t know – the sins I’ve worked so hard to hide from others that I’ve hidden them from my own memory. Forgive them all, O Lord. Because of your great mercy, let me be absolved, and because of your bountiful goodness, let me be delivered from the bonds of sin. Grant this, O
heavenly Father, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our blessed Lord and Savior. Amen.
M: We stand before God! We know we can enter his presence! We know we are counted perfect because of Jesus. We know God’s anger was satisfied by Jesus’ death on the cross and his gracious love guaranteed by Jesus’ resurrection to life. It is because of him, and by his authority that I, his called servant, can announce this good news to you: You are forgiven, in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit!
HYMN Oh, for a Thousand Tongues to Sing | 340 (vs 5-6)
PRAYER OF THE DAY
M/C: Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve. Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
