Recorded live at Ashkenaz in Berkeley May 27th, 2014. This video was produced for Roots of Fire.
Roots of Fire is a documentary film and digital series that explores Louisiana French Music as it pushes into the future. The film will spotlight breakout artists who are creating music rooted in Louisiana French, as they navigate the fine line between cultural heritage and artistic progression. The digital series will broaden out and feature vignettes with a variety of artists, including established stars in Cajun and Zydeco, behind-the-scenes videos, and featurettes on related topics.
The film exposes new global audiences to the creative explosion of music rooted in Louisiana French traditions. Through immersive coverage, the film spotlights young luminaries pushing the boundaries of Zydeco, Cajun, and other genres that draw from Louisiana French dialects and culture. Not simply a music doc, the film will delve into the cultural history of the music to place the modern expression into the proper historical context of colonialism, exile, slavery, and cultural fusion. The film will be driven by performances, interviews, cinematic sequences, and verite coverage of the artists as they navigate the day to day challenges of life in the music industry. Through compelling narrative and stylish filmmaking techniques, the project will reach for new audiences outside of the usual channels for this music.
While the film is in production, we will release videos in conjunction with our work on the film. These videos will range from short promotional spots with the artists, vignettes on topics related to the film, short docs with stars in the space, behind the scenes videos, and really anything else that ties into the film that we think you might find interesting. Sometimes, we might just want to share a cool sequence with you. At other times, we might decide to fully produce a short documentary that stands all on its own. We plan to tie in social media with app specific content like Facebook and Instagram videos. There won’t be a set schedule for digital releases, but our hope is that we can keep you interested and engaged through the project’s digital presence while we work on completing the film, and that the series will become a home for new content after the film is complete.
