JMU stayed hot at the plate with a 9-2 win over visiting Radford on Tuesday.
Starting pitcher junior Alex Valadja struck out seven Highlanders in six innings, giving up six hits. JMU junior David Herbek hit his third home run of the year with a grand slam in the first inning. It was the Dukes first grand slam in two seasons. In the second inning junior Trevor Knight hit his team-leading sixth bomb of the season with a two-run shot.
It was the second game in a row that the Dukes held an opponent to two runs, as they beat Colonial Athletic Association rival George Mason 14-2 in Sunday’s rubber match in Fairfax. Coach Spanky McFarland’s squad improved to 12-11 and is back in action Wednesday at Longwood. Valadja improved to 1-2 on the year. Radford dropped to 12-10 and junior pitcher Shane Pysh feel to 0-3.
