The Shamrock Shuffle could have been called the Shamrock Shiver on Sunday, but raw weather didn't deter more than 25,000 runners from their appointed rounds.
For a few elite contenders, the annual 8K run sponsored by Bank of America was a chance to compete and tune up for coming marathons. For most participants, it was a chance to meet personal goals, even if that meant just making it to the beer tent a block past the finish line.
The race marks the start of the outdoor running season in Chicago, but it's also an excuse to extend St. Patrick's Day cheer.
The winner Sunday of the 31st shuffle was John Kemboi, 19, of Kenya, with a time of 23:39. It was the first U.S. competition for Kemboi, who last year won the Kenyan National Junior Cross Country Championship.
The top finisher among women was Tera Moody, 29, of Colorado Springs, CO and a native of St. Charles, IL with a time of 27:21. Moody won the shuffle in 2007 and was runner-up in last year's race.
