In June 2014, Barb Webb, who served at Marian High School for nine years as a chemistry teacher and a volleyball coach, discovered the joyful news that she and her partner, Kristen, were pregnant. Ms. Webb informed the Marian administration of her pregnancy in July 2014, asking for a leave of absence in a proactive attempt to remain discreet and to not cause any undue attention to herself, her partner, and their soon-to-be family. In August 2014, the president of Marian High School gave Ms. Webb two options: resign, or we will terminate you. If she had chosen to resign, Ms. Webb would have received health benefits through the end of May 2015 and would have been required to sign a confidentiality agreement. Essentially, the Marian administration would have paid for her silence.
Barb Webb, however, did not choose to be silent. She chose to take the termination and to speak out against discrimination. In doing so, a community of thousands of supporters from across the globe--starting with just one passionate alumna who started a Facebook group--chose to stand with her in solidarity.
We are here to encourage you to stand with us, too, and to stand for equality.
