SESSION 3: 15.45 – 17.30. Friday, March 26
Wiki loves art NL is an initiative of Creative Commons Netherlands, Wikimedia Foundation Netherlands and Amsterdam Museum Night (n8). During the project, the visual documentation of art objects in museums and archives was crowdsourced to photography lovers. This resulted in a huge online database of images, all available under a creative commons license to illustrate articles on Wikipedia. The initiative is a continuation of Wikipedia Takes Manhattan (New York, october 2008) and Wikipedia Loves Art (UK, february 2009).
As a follow-up, Hendrik-Jan Grievink is now working on a book about the project, that both document the process and brings back the works in a physical context, taking the whole project one step further. In his talk, Hendrik-Jan will elaborate on his ideas and make a subjective visual analysis about the somewhat tense relationship between visual culture and Wikipedia.
