Sgt. Ryan Baumann, 24, of Great Mills, Md., was killed in action Aug. 1 during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Baumann was featured in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's series on the war in Afghanistan. Baumann, a soldier with the US Army's 4th Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) out of Fort Campbell, Ky., was killed when his humvee hit an improvised explosive device along Route Alaska in the Khost Province. Baumann was planning on returning home in January to marry his fiance, Lauren Smith, 20, of St. Mary's City. Baumann's loved ones talk about their loss.
