Hello! I am a theatre practitioner. This means that I live life telling stories and a big part of my practice is public incubation.
The goal is to ensure that my work is accountable. That it does not smell of bullshit and so that it does not turn into public masturbation.
Over the course of this evening, I will engage you in the public incubation of me. Catherine Estioko Hernandez. Daughter of Jaime Carmelo Lising Hernandez and Cecille Estioko Hernandez.
In September 2012, I was interviewed by Ron Jones of On Tha Move Radio Harlem asking me for the playlist of my life. This was a delightful dilemma, uncovering the soundtrack of my experiences and divulging the personal details behind my choices.
Now let's think of the anatomy of the playlist: it is the opposite of a mixed tape, which back in my day, given to crushes or friends to create a narrative of romance or comradery based on a selection of songs , which they are meant to personally enjoy. It was analogue at its most flawed and lovely; crackled, white-out labels, transferred from one hand to another ("I Love You", "Mack Daddy Mix" whatever). But see, a playlist, is meant to be a necklace, the author's energy in sequence, meant to be enjoyed and distributed by many. So here it is in theatre form, at Buddies in Bad Times, the sound of my life.
I am a proud woman of colour of Filipino, Spanish, Chinese and Indian decent. I am as queer as a $3 bill. I am a single mom. I love pig in all forms, especially dead on my plate next to a bed of rice and eggplant on a Sunday morning. I like my eggs sunny side up, I like my lovers face down. I like my conversations fast and furious. I like my sex slow and delicious.
My pronouns of choice are she and her. You may also call me bitch, homo, Scarborough, Legs, or my Filipino name, Kating. Just don't call me Asian princess (right? That's bullshit). You can ask me for a hug but please, do not ask me to love you long time. I wear my heart on my sleeve and I wear my clothes...well I wear very little clothes.
I am a femme and this is my playlist.
