During the 2009/10 recession, Rhode Island had the second highest unemployment rate in the country and empty storefronts were a common occurrence, especially downtown.

Coming Soon was developed as a community revitalization project to address the sense of powerlessness that these empty storefronts engender—a design intervention that would allow residents to literally "draw" their visions for these spaces directly into the empty storefronts themselves.

Not only would the activity encourage imagination, play, and a sense of optimism, it would also reflect the actual desires of city residents—information that could prove useful to both property owners and potential renters.

Coming Soon was developed collaboratively by Jane Androski, Marc Choi, Andrew LeClair and Taylor Stapleton as part of a Visiting Designers workshop (with Jake Barton of Local Projects) at Rhode Island School of Design in the Spring of 2010.
