Anthropomorphism: n. attribution of human form or other characteristics to anything other than a human being.
Designer Katy Parnello is a self taught woodworker specializing in Electroliers, re-purposed wood wall hangings with filament bulb lighting. Coming from a performance background, Katy desired to give her pieces a way to communicate their unique personalities and create an experience with the viewer beyond the visual medium. Her solution was to let her pieces perform.
Her debut show "Anthropomorphism," tackles this question: What do we do when we're alone? The show consists of 16 Electroliers which are connected to a sound board that plays 10 pieces of music. The lights are pre programmed to dance to each song, personifying the pieces as they express their reactions to the music. Each song provides the soundtrack for 10 individual performances, which take place in a fish-bowl-like venue. The audience stands outside the gallery and gazes through the windows at each individual, creating an intimate, voyeuristic relationship between the viewer and the performer.
