Arab hip hop is a new genre that has hit the music scene in the 21st century. Since its inception the film Sling Shot Hip Hop documented the political meanings behind the music. The artists have toured the world and produced CDs that can be enjoyed broadly. Despite its popularity with Arab youth, this art form is nonetheless subversive. The artists must prove themselves “authentic” enough for the Arab audience, while simultaneously “authentic” enough for the international hip hop scene. With legendary American hip hop artists like Chuck D weighing in on the significance of Palestinian hip hop, we decided it would be useful to assess beats and rhymes from artists in the hip hop realm as well as investigating how Palestinian hip hop is making head way in Palestinian-American communities and diaspora for people of various ages.
