A lecture given at Manchester Art Gallery as part of Angels of Anarchy: Women Artists and Surrealism on
3 October 2009
With Dr Patricia Allmer, MIRIAD, Manchester Metropolitan University
In this lecture, exhibition curator Dr Patricia Allmer discusses how some women surrealist artists explore, challenge and rework conventional artistic traditions. By doing so, these artists demonstrate and reveal how art history contributes to constructing and maintaining power relations between men and women.
The talk gives further insight into a number of artists and artworks represented in the exhibition, Angels of Anarchy, including Meret Oppenheim’s objects, Lee Miller’s photographs of desert-scapes and Mimi Parent’s strange and unsettling assemblages in boxes.
