"The Hero's Journey in Film" is a labour of love. Spanning 80 years of international film history, it consists of over 90 individual films. These all share the fundamental elements of the mythological hero’s adventure as outlined in Professor Joseph Campbell’s “The Hero With a Thousand Faces” (1949), a seminal work of literature which inspired independent film director George Lucas to create his own mythological saga with the “Star Wars” Trilogy.
Campbell outlines the key sequential elements of the heroic adventures as follows - “A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man.” (“The Hero With a Thousand Faces,” 23).
65 years later, the mythological hero’s quest is alive and well in world cinema.
These universal themes transcend time and all cultural barriers. I hope with this film that you find your own answers and as Joseph Campbell was ever fond of saying, “Follow your bliss.”
