Coco Zhao, a jazz vocalist based in Shanghai, cross-pollinates Mandarin vocals with the distinct sounds of contemporary American jazz. In the '20s and '30s, jazz thrived in Shanghai’s colorful cabarets and dance halls but was later suppressed during the Cultural Revolution. Nowadays, the music has become re-popularized due to a new generation of young jazz musicians like Zhao. He performed at the Asian Art Museum in April, 2010.
