OECMs

Other effective area-based conservation measures” (OECMs) offer an exciting new tool for countries as they progress towards achieving their 30 by 30 target (having 30% of land and seas effectively protected or conserved by the year 2030).

With consent at their core OECMs aim to more directly recognise the efforts of individuals, local communities or organisations who are providing great outcomes for biodiversity regardless of the primary reason they are managing their land.

Since their inception protected landscapes have been at the forefront of supporting both our most valued areas for biodiversity alongside the communities that call these areas home. What role then might protected landscapes play in being drivers for the creation of OECMs within their boundaries?
