Note: A slightly easier approach is to make the word document an attachment to the question rather than a link inside the question text. This video shows the pattern for creating a one-question test in Test Center (a.k.a Mneme) that allows you to give a document-based final over a long time period with individual timers for each student. You prepare the exam in a Microsoft Word document, make a single question test with an essay question, upload the exam document as a link in the essay text and then publish the exam. When students start the exam, they can download the file and then 'continue later', edit the file locally and when completed (within the time limit) upload the exam answers back to Test Center and complete their test.
