Sur la Plage is an original collaborative performance by Toni Tits and butoh dancer Beatrice Schleyer. Toni filmed Schleyer on the shores of a beach in France in the summer of 2013. Her footage documents both an erotic photoshoot of Schleyer and her following butoh improvisation. This experience began a dialogue between the two artists, who were inspired in particular by the contrast between the two events of the day; the self consciousness of the sexy posing and the deeper and more visceral state achieved in the butoh which followed.
The artists met again later in the year to hone the final piece for the Panic Sermons at Apiary Studios in London as part of the Modern Panic IV exhibition curated by James Elphick. Schleyer found ways to interact with Toni's video remix of the footage, combining live dance with the transformed document.
