In January 1972, while studying photography at Manchester Polytechnic, I rented a disused barber's shop at no. 79b Greame Street, Moss Side and converted it into a free photographic studio. Here local people wandered to have their pictures taken. The area was being redeveloped, all the houses demolished. I wanted to make a record of the people who lived there before they were dispersed.
