World-renown steelpan composers and performers Liam Teague and Cliff Alexis lead the NIU Steepan through a raucous concert at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk.
Packing over 30 students and a plethora of varying sized steelpans into the small concert hall, the award-winning steelpan group caused such a stir among attendees that they wouldn't let them leave. After three encores, co-director Teague simply shrugged and said through a smile, "We haven't got more, but we'll be back."
Teague and Alexis open up students trained only to read music about the importance of feeling a full groove. Not one band member stood still through the evening of calypso, soca and classical compositions, as well as some Stevie Wonder.
