SOOK-YIN LEE | BROKEN ENGLISH (MARIANNE FAITHFULL)
"Broken English", written by Marianne Faithfull, Barry Reynolds, Joe Mavety, Steve York and Terry Stannard in 1979, was the title song of her masterpiece comeback album. Faithfull’s raw and hard-living voice examines the futility of war, its senseless brutality and human toll. It critiques terrorism and the breakdown of communication during conflict. History repeats. Swap out the tensions of the late 70s for our current-day upheaval and "Broken English" remains a timeless revolutionary anthem.
Canadian multimedia icon, Sook-Yin Lee covers "Broken English", producing, engineering, recording, mixing, mastering, and performing all instruments and electronics. Through hacked technology, and encrusted noisemakers, she reimagines the song while remaining faithful to Faithfull. The artwork for Lee’s single is a playful swipe of the original album art, and while the 1979 music video, directed by Derek Jarman, juxtaposed historic Nazi footage, war, and pinball, Lee directs a music video culled from images she documented in Buenos Aires and Toronto.
Sook-Yin Lee will be releasing a full length album of original songs in spring 2026, her first album on Toronto-based indie label Hand Drawn Dracula.

LYRICS:
Could have come through anytime
Cold, lonely puritan
What are you fighting for?
It's not my security
It's just an old war
Not even a cold war
Don't say it in Russian
Don't say it in German
Say it in broken English
Say it in broken English
Lose your father, your husband
Your mother, your children
What are you dying for?
It's not my reality
It's just an old war
Not even a cold war
Don't say it in Russian
Don't say it in German
Say it in broken English
Say it in broken English
What are you fighting for?
What are you fighting for?
Could have come through anytime
Cold, lonely puritan
What are you fighting for?
It's not my security
It’s just an old war
Russian, German
Broken English
What are you fighting for?
What are you fighting for?
What are you fighting for?
What are you fighting for?
