Award winning literature and reader development organisation Collected Works CIC delivers Adopt an Author for Brighton Festival. It is a wonderful project that seeks to enthuse and inspire reluctant readers, engaging them in reading for pleasure, beyond basic literacy. Professional authors are matched with classes of primary school children at KS2. Launching on World Book Day each year in March, classes receive a set of books written by their author. They read the book in class then engage in an email correspondence over the next two months. The project culminates in a private party, during Brighton Festival, where each class gets to meet their author. This gives young readers an insight into the creative process and hard work that goes into writing a book and enables authors to engage directly with their audience.
