This performance, especially created for a gallery context, takes the form of an auction, where instead of an art work, a story is the subject of selling.
The story, relating to an object presented on a plinth, is sold word by word. Thus, sold works have more than one owner. Stories, once personal, become collective tales, however fragmentary: unsold words will not be told. After purchasing a word, the new owners receive a certificate of authenticity.
"Tell/Sell, a common story" is a performance work created in collaboration with Esther Mugambi, originally commissioned by Ellen de Bruijne Projects in the frame of their Performance Programme in January/February 2014.
In 2015 the project was shown as an installation and a series of performances as part of the group show "Father, can't you see I'm burning" at De Appel Arts Centre, Amsterdam. The project will be shown as an installation throughout the time of the exhibition and activated during the public programmes.
