For Display Only is a life-sized Vermont Danby marble replica of bridal designer Pnina Tornai's most popular gown. The piece was hand carved from a single 12-ton block of marble over the course of three months in Vermont and represents the artist and the designers mutual affection for the beauty of transformation. Pnina's ever-evolving collection features several convertible gowns which transform to create two looks from a single dress. This marries well with Mr. Thomson's self-professed obsession with transforming largely immovable stone into art which seems to fold and flow like fabric.
The unveiling took place at New York City bridal boutique Kleinfeld, the shop featured on the popular television show "Say Yes to the Dress." The sculpture will remain on view in the high-profile location for a minimum of 8 months.
ABC Stone connected Mr. Thomson with couture designer Pnina Tornai. Together, they selected a gown to be carved. "The real test is to see if it's ignored," Thomson said. "If people in the shop don't realize at first that it's marble, then I have succeeded."
