Ziauddin Yousafzai - Creating Human Dignity for Children and Women: Education and Economic Empowerment

MEDA

Friday, November 7, 2014 at the new Canadian Museum for Human Rights for the MEDA Convention 2014.

Ziauddin Yousafzai, Pakistani human rights activist and father of Malala, 2014 Nobel Peace Prize recipient

Hear the man behind Malala. Professional educator and advocate Ziauddin Yousafzai, father of education activist Malala Yousafzai, will reflect on his influence in her upbringing, which moved Malala to take courageous acts that culminated in her being shot by the Taliban on her way home from school in 2012. As a long-time campaigner for peace and education, Ziauddin never dreamed the “sins of the father” would be visited upon his daughter rather than himself. Believing that “education is emancipation,” he tirelessly campaigned for girls’ education, in defiance of Taliban law, long before his daughter was born. Ziauddin jokes that Malala used to be known as his daughter, but now he is known as her father – and he is proud to have it that way.
