They also FRACKed us up! A bad economy was not the only thing the Bush/Cheney administration left behind. If you have never heard of Hydraulic Fracturing, Fracking, HydroFracking, Frac, all of the Gas Industry terms for this process created by Halliburton in 1949. As you may know Dick Cheney was the CEO of Halliburton. In the 2005 Energy bill by the Bush/Cheney Administration allowed the Gas Industry to be exempt from the EPA, the CLEAN WATER ACT, the SAFE DRINKING WATER ACT, the CLEAN AIR ACT, the SUPER FUND ACT, in a memorandum of agreement by the Gas Industry that they would NOT use DIESEL FUEL to inject into the land. Last year 2 of those big companies testified under OATH that they ARE still using diesel fuel for hydrofracking. My neighbor hood is GROUND ZERO for the first Marcellus Shale Fracking in Virginia. Since the 23rd of Feb. 2010 we have tried really hard to KILL THE DRILL. However our elected officials want to pass this measure through. My problem is that we live in a 100 year FLOOD ZONE. We had floods in 1985, 1995, 1996 and recently a couple of months ago we had flood warnings. 100 Years? Do the math! Our watershed flows into the Shenandoah River and into the Potomac River which is the watershed for Washington D.C.
There are over 70 thousand residents in this county and this measure will be passed to benefit only 13 people. Again do the math! That is not including the total in other townships all the way up to the Potomac watershed. In 32 other states people are scrambling to fix this problem. NY has a moratorium on Gas Drilling and PA is trying to pass a moratorium on this too. But Virginia wants to go full speed ahead without considering the lessons learned from the other 32 states. GasLand is a movie directed by a young man Josh Fox, it won the SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL SPECIAL JURY PRIZE in 2010. The FRAC ACT is now before legislation in D.C. with 50 supporters. If you never heard of HYDROFRACKING before you will real soon. The movie Split Estate was another one, on the impacts of Hydrofracking. This is going to be a major issue real soon. If you see these movies GasLand and Split Estate you will learn that this IS DANGEROUS. More films need to come out about this controversial issue. We all should have seen Erin Brockovich same issue. More needs to be done. We have created a blog called hydrofracking.virginiajournal.org we need to educate the public but more importantly our neighbors. They need to go into this with their eyes wide open.
