IN MY BACKYARD is a project about the Amsterdam Vondelpark on the occasion of its 150th anniversary. For this project visual artist Jet Nijkamp invited three poets to write a poem about the park. Anna Enquist, appointed City Poet of Amsterdam, wrote a poem about the rehabilitation clinic adjacent to the park. From behind the walls of this clinic people without an arm or a leg hear the sounds of playing children, joggers running, horses, and they regret that they can’t participate. Those sounds of the park reflect lives, but we don’t know what lives. They are reflections and like the shadows in Plato’s cave we have to interpret or imagine what lives they represent. In de video pictures we see reflections of lives in the form of shadows and silhouettes of people running, walking, skating, cycling and we don’t know what lives are behind those reflections. Thus the park reflects peoples lives and it’s up to our imagination to fill in those reflections.
