Over the last year, a unique grassroots community space has grown in Bendigo.
“It started with a community garden,” says Rose Vincent, the manager of The Old Church on the Hill, “and grew from there.”
Rose and her partner Andy are instrumental in transforming an empty, unused Church and its buildings to a thriving grassroots community space.
The idea to be a welcoming place where all parts of the community can gather and connect, and where different groups can use the space.
Community activities happen there seven days a week. U3A members play ping pong, parents and kids meet for a playgroup and about 25 women craft there weekly. There’s music nights, dance classes, hip hop classes, youth groups, martial arts and language classes in French, Spanish and Mandarin.
Rose sees her role as “to be behind the scenes”because she wants to let the community feel that it is their space.
