Earlier this year, Stillmotion spoke at an event in Portland sharing some storytelling techniques with non-profits. From that talk, we got connected to Chess For Success who were very excited about the possibility of being a part of Storytelling Parade.
As the deadline grew closer and none of the filmmakers were paired up with their organization, we thought it was the perfect opportunity for the Stillmotion and us at Story & Heart to work together to bring this story to life.
Below are our keywords for the film;
Empowerment - giving them skills to rise above and become more, we want the kids to feel like it is an opportunity to learn and grow.
Bond - chess may not be a team sport but there’s still sportsmanship, as well as relationship and respect for your opponent
Cool - In our culture chess isn’t as attractive or popular as sports or music, but it can be a powerful developmental activity so we need to make it sexier and more fun
Move - borrowing from the tag line ‘helping children succeed, one move at a time’. So in this sense move is obviously the chess reference as well as the idea of intention and choice.
Bright - it speaks to the uplifting, positive nature of what this organization is doing for the kids as well as the intelligence required in chess.
