Peak Energy Agriculture Rewards (PEAR), is an electricity demand response program for growers in California's Central Valley. A wireless remote monitoring and control system sends alerts of peak demand events during hot summer months. Growers participate by agreeing to shut off large power electric loads, like deep-well pumps, for a few hours. In exchange for "negawatts," growers receive substantial rewards in the form of cash payments, bill credits and equipment incentives. Plus, growers can use the gear year-round to monitor irrigation pump status and irrigation operation through their cell phones or over the Internet.
