Kubrick North sync
A couple of things.
The music is from North's original recording sessions for 2001.
The film was edited by 17 minutes after original release, and North may not have scored a final cut anyway, so sections can be expected to not time as well with the scenes in much the same way as North intended.
Notes on music:
'Bones' used for the opening title, as Kubrick used the same Strauss piece employed in the 'Bones' scene on the opening title also. Doubtless North would have written something that more snugly fit the titles (or had the titles edited to fit his music) had he written something. (The influence of the Strauss piece is unmistakeable here.)
I used the more reflective version of 'Foraging' for the opening scenes. (The more combative alternate version is included at the end.)
It appears no music was written by North for the appearances of the Monolith. Was Ligeti's Requiem always planned?
I should have done a bit more work on the Space Station docking scene before this export. That scene's length almost certainly changed.
The travel to the moon surface cue is much shorter than the trip. I've covered the second half with a reworking of the 'Space Station Docking' cue that North wrote for another film (Dragonslayer, I think). So don't be surprised at the shift in recording quality midway through the lunar transport scene.
The version of the visuals used for this exercise was a rip of the PAL Region 4 DVD, which was slowed to 96% to approximate the speed of the 24 fps footage.
