"The Head of a Pin" portrays the awkward ruminations of the filmmaker and her partner—long time urbanites—as they attempt to learn about nature. Shot in late August in an area that borders the Delaware River, the project began as an examination of the differences between urban and rural life, between the daily grind and summer vacations, but one day my attention was caught by a fatal battle between a spider and its prey, and the direction of the piece was changed.
So what exactly is this “nature” that’s so lovely and such a respite if it’s filled with death and dismemberment? And what changes when we try to learn about it instead of treating it as a pretty backdrop to our daily work and worries?
