This is a ski day dedicated to our friend Dave Genchi, whom was critically injured while snowboarding in 2006.
The Steamboat Powdercats picked a blue bird day in March 2008 to ski in the back country. The day and this film is a tribute to Dave Genchi.
After a pre-dawn snowcat prep and fuel up the powdercat crew set out. They enjoyed the record snow under sunny skies and warm late winter conditions. Some fun air drops and long turns led to lunch and then some more skiing.
Following Dave's emphasis for backcountry awareness and safety, the Powdercats were led through a impromptu practice rescue operation. A medivac helicopter they can call upon in the rare case of an emergency was on hand for the training exercise.
By the end of the day, countless perfect runs and a little bit of friendly heckling led to sharing some brews and being thankful for what nature provided - all in Dave's honor.
The film was shot on a super 8 camera to feel vintage and give it a visual style of its own. It was so cold early in the morning that the main super 8 camera froze up and luckily the back up super 8 camera could handle the freezing temperatures that allowed us to shoot this little movie.
Very special thanks to everyone whom made this project possible and Matador Records for donating the song we edited the footage to and to everyone at Oniricom for building the support page and hosting the movie on davidgenchi.com
We hope you enjoy this short movie filmed with his friends and on the slopes of Dave's old stomping grounds: His beloved backcountry of Steamboat, Colorado.
