Mater Dei High School has been one of Orange County’s premier secondary institutions for over 60 years and hundreds of students, known as Monarchs, have served in the United States Armed Forces. Mater Dei recently committed to honoring all past alumni who served in the military by constructing a memorial named the Sentinels of Freedom. This momentous memorial is prominently located in Mary’s Grotto, a key spot within the campus where it can be seen by thousands of students, teachers and visitors. The predominant center piece of the memorial is a compilation of three 10 feet tall granite panels that are assembled as integral components of a tranquil fountain feature. Surrounding the granite pillars is a pool of water, precast concrete pavers, granite benches and lush landscaping. One of the granite panels features etchings of the U.S. Flag and excerpt from Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address; another panel includes the five seals of the military branches and cross with the names of six fallen graduates; and the last panel includes the names of all alumni who have served in the military.
J&M Concrete was proud to have participated in such a profound memorial and had the opportunity to construct all the concrete amenities including our Intecrete® concrete system with hand-seeded colored glass beads in the fountain basin and accent paving components at the base of each of the granite panels.
