Danny Murphy was born in Katherine in 1963 and has lived and worked as a potter for 35 years. Having developed his own diverse decorative techniques his unique works often reflect the rugged bush surroundings and typical Northern Territory outback lifestyle; influenced by the weathered sandstone outcrops and escarpments of the Katherine Gorge and the heavily treed river corridor near his home and coloured by the red sand, spinifex leaves and trees, and the dry season's vivid blue skies.
Danny's works imbue a purposeful humility, instilled with character and personality and not contrived through ego, unashamedly occupying their rightful place on earth.
Danny's works continue to sell all over Australia and on occasions overseas. Danny has arranged successful exhibitions in Darwin, Adelaide and Sydney. In Katherine, the pots are sold through a yearly organised sale which also includes pottery from Danny's mother Ruth.
Danny also regularly travels to Adelaide where he is part of Studio Potters S.A. which allows him to keep abreast of new knowledge and techniques, and where sometimes the solitude of his normal rural environment makes external contact infrequent.
Danny's pottery has brought great joy and pleasure to his regular followers and new converts. The confidence and adulation he receives further drive him to strive for personal growth in the craft he has enjoyed for many years.
