After Francine Gambo encountered a physician with poor communication skills, she vowed to help other patients avoid a similar traumatic experience. She joined EVMS as a “standardized patient,” a role where she portrays a patient in order to help health-care providers learn proper communication techniques and clinical skills. The work has proven so impactful that even her son, Devan Gambo, got involved. He became a standardized patient at just 13 years old and now works for the program full-time.
