American Engineer, concert work for flute, clarinet, violin, viola, cello, electronic percussion, and live video for 3D glasses. Performed by the Argento Ensemble, Miller Theater
American Engineer combines an instrumental ensemble,
electronic sound, and live video for 3D glasses into one fused sensory experience. All audio and video source samples come from a mid-20th-century industrial film of the same title. These ephemeral scraps are woven into a tangible, though ever-shifting, network of correlations between the three media. Thus the video (triggered live by the percussionist) becomes an extension of his musical composition, with the same musical properties of rhythm, force, spatialization, and counterpoint.
