A will is a written document that contains instructions for managing and distributing assets after your death.

Also known as a Last Will And Testament, your will lays out your wishes for how your assets, such as property and belongings, are to be distributed among your chosen beneficiaries after you pass on.

Without a will, state law decides who gets your assets, which can result in an uneven or undesired distribution, causes and loved ones may be left out entirely.

Thus while a will is essential in estate planning, it is often insufficient, and since it only covers post-death asset management a comprehensive estate plan is often recommended in addition to a will.
