Breathe Arts Health Research is a social enterprise that designs and delivers exciting and innovative ways of using the arts in healthcare, to improve outcomes for patients, staff and communities.
Its flagship programme is Breathe Magic, where patients learn magic skills designed to provide therapeutic benefits. Breathe Magic Camps are 10-day programmes of intensive and highly-effective therapy designed to improve the motor skills and psychological wellbeing of children with hemiplegia (a weakness or loss of control affecting one side of the body). Magic Circle magicians work alongside occupational therapists to teach specially adapted tricks which develop motor skills, cognitive abilities and self-confidence. Similar work is being carried out for adult stroke patients. Breathe has also developed a ground-breaking programme where teenagers with severe mental health problems are taught magic tricks in order to improve their emotional wellbeing and communication skills.
The use of magic in a therapeutic context is a powerful motivator. It has delivered significant clinical benefits for participants, not only in terms of physical outcomes but also in terms of improved confidence, self-esteem and independence.
