Informed consent is an obligation that the law places upon doctors and physicians before they engage in certain kinds of procedures or treatments. The idea is each individual has the right to make decisions about their own body and a doctor cannot operate on me without my consent. But it is not enough to just get me to say, "yes". The doctor has legal obligations to explain the procedure. Specifically, the doctor has to explain the risks, the consequences, and the alternatives to any surgery or procedure before informed consent can be obtained. If the doctor doesn't do that, then even if the doctor doesn't do anything else wrong, that doctor has violated a patients rights by failing to obtain informed consent. And that violation is actionable.
