Nyani Quarmyne, is a freelance photographer currently based in Ghana. Quarmyne’s work centers on human issues, and on social justice themes in particular. Coming from a multi-cultural background spanning Africa and the West, he inhabits the space between these two worlds and frequently finds himself treading the line between the desire to deliver a more honest and nuanced portrayal of Africa, and the constrained expectations of the Western media machine.
Nyani returns to News Xchange (he was a speaker at NX12 in Barcelona) to talk about Africa, the visual presentation of the country and its stories, and what role – if any – empathy should play in news.
For those lucky enough to have heard Nyani in Barcelona or to be familiar with his powerful work, this will be a rare and wonderful opportunity to candidly discuss how the process of informing can and should lead to the process of understanding and contextualizing.
