During my final year in journalism school at UC Berkeley, I focused on telling stories about Filipino-American hip-hop culture in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Meet Emcee Mario "Nomi" de Mira, 30, of Filipino rap group Power Struggle.
The Nigeria-born, Minnesota native moved to the Bay Area five years ago. In addition to performing around the Bay with his group, he works as an organizer at the Filipino Community Center (FCC) in San Francisco, specializing in employee rights and hip-hop workshops for youth.
The FCC tends to the needs of Filipinos living in the Bay Area. Nomi's group, Power Struggle, addresses issues faced by Filipinos, Filipino-Americans and other groups in the U.S. and abroad.
Tune in to what he has to say about merging community organizing with hip-hop.
